Dear Lions,
(see attachments)
→ Doc-1,
Doc-2 &
Doc-3
In early January 2007, Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF)
sent out an email blast (see email below) requesting proposals to
fund Lions glaucoma education, outreach and screening activities.
This is an update on that email with a few more specific details that
may assist you in planning your projects.
1. Please be aware that Allergan has a network of eye care
professionals across the country, and in those communities that are
selected, an Allergan eye care professional representative will work
together with the Lions to help carry out the glaucoma screenings.
2. In the original Request for Proposals (RFP), under the 'Project
Partners', we stated that a local ophthalmologist was needed. We
would like to convey that all eye care professionals are eligible to
participate in this project, as long as the person is certified to
diagnose and treat all forms of glaucoma. (Please see the revised RFP
attached which clearly conveys the eligible project partners). We
apologize for this oversight.
3. The RFP requires district approval. LCIF is aware that a district
cabinet meeting may not take place before the application due date.
Therefore, in these cases, an endorsement letter from the District
Governor and the Lions supporting the project is sufficient.
4. Lions will receive complete support from a public relations
company to implement publicity to promote the screening events in the
months, weeks and days leading up to the events. A virtual eye will
be made available to demonstrate the impact of glaucoma by simulating
virtual effects of the disease with a computer model viewed through
3-D glasses.
If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Best of success!

Copy of email sent in early January 2007:
Dear Lions,
Glaucoma is the second leading cause of global blindness. Experts
estimate
that half of the people affected by glaucoma may not know they have
it,as
there are often no symptoms.
Lions clubs and districts have been at the forefront in the fight
against
avoidable blindness. LCIF and Allergan are partnering to offer Lions
an
opportunity for glaucoma education, outreach and screenings in your
local
communities. This opportunity is available to all Lions, whether they
have
never had a screening before to those who have already hosted
screenings.
Grants in the amount of $5,000 - $7,500 are available for these
efforts to
help the Lions purchase equipment and educate the public about
glaucoma.
Equipment, technical assistance and public relations support will be
provided by LCIF/Allergan to the Lions.
Please find attached a Request for Proposals (RFP) that explains the
project
objectives, screening protocol, format for proposals, and the review
and
selection process. Applications are due by February 15, 2007.
Please contact me with any questions. We look forward to working with
you to
inform more people about this ever-growing eye disease.
Sincerely,
Gina M.Zanin
